When a user tries to save an output with the same name as an existing dataset with the purpose of overwriting it, however as we know, Map Viewer returns an error that output failed because an item with the same name already exists. So the user has to either delete the that existing item or change the output name.

Why doesn't AGOL support overwriting items?

Hi @Ed_

Thank you for your question, I think that this would be an excellent post for Esri Ideas and consideration for future releases of ArcGIS Online. I have linked below a document that outlines being able to overwrite data within ArcGIS Online.

Manage hosted feature layers

What are the differences between overwriting and appending data in ArcGIS Online?

A workaround could be to use ArcGIS Pro:

1. Connect to the ArcGIS Online Portal

2. Bring in the data from ArcGIS Online

3. Export the output with the same name

4. Remove the original data

5. Overwrite the data
