Newbie question How to add a editable layer

I have create a basemap with topo from arcgis.online in ArcMap.
Next I want to add a layer with features to add, for example a building.

But after adding a layer in Arcmap it is not possible to add features. The layer is not editable.

How do I add a layer witch can countain features??

Thanks Mikem, but the video is mend for online arcgis, am I wright?
Of course this is a solution for my question, but still I also want to know how to add a editable layer in offline Arcmap.

I believe that I have to use Arccatalog for this purpose?

Yes, that is for ArcGIS Online...my mistake. You might try posting in the ArcGIS Desktop forums instead.
