Hello Esri Community,

We are facing challenges where we need to share password-protected OGC WMS and WFS services from ArcGIS Online with other systems that are unfortunately legacy platforms, lacking modern APIs like the excellent ArcGIS REST API (ArcGIS REST API Documentation) that Esri systems natively provide.

Use Cases

  1. Legacy System Compatibility:
Many municipalities and utility companies use older systems, such as Trimble Locus, which rely on OGC WMS/WFS services for data integration and visualization. These systems often do not support modern API approaches, making secure WMS/WFS services essential for compatibility.

  2. Utility and Network Management:
For clients managing critical infrastructure, including district heating, water distribution, and gas networks, securely sharing geospatial data between ArcGIS Online and these legacy platforms is vital for operational workflows.

  3. Controlled Access for External Partners:
Password-protected WMS/WFS services are often needed to grant controlled access to external stakeholders, ensuring secure data sharing without exposing sensitive datasets.

Challenges and Questions

ArcGIS Online does not currently support traditional password-protected WMS/WFS services. Instead, it offers more modern and secure alternatives, such as token-based authentication and OGC API Features (OGC API Features Documentation). While these are superior in many ways, they are not compatible with the older systems some of our clients use.

Key Questions:

  1. How can we implement password-protected OGC WMS and WFS services from ArcGIS Online for systems that require this functionality?
  2. Could a proxy-based solution help? For example, we are exploring Resource Proxy Tokens as a potential approach. Has anyone successfully used this or similar solutions for authenticating and securing WMS/WFS services?

We would greatly appreciate your advice, experiences, or recommendations on this matter.

Thank you in advance for your insights.

Best regards, Juha
