Hi all,
Is Template Management still available in Map Viewer Classic? I know it's deprecated, but feature parity has not been achieved. I'm unable to create a template in Map Viewer or Field Maps Designer. I can duplicate just fine, but creating is not possible. I used to return to Map Viewer Classic when I needed this functionality, now it doesn't appear to be available.
Hi @BlakeMorrison,
1. Map Viewer Classic
yes, template management is still available in Map Viewer Classic. I am able to manage templates and add new ones.
2. Map Viewer
Currently the best practice for creating templates in Map Viewer or Field Maps Designer is to duplicate and change an existing template. Another option is to use the update button to Sync the templates after you add new types of features in the styles pane. Do neither of those workflows work for you?
Admittedly, I always fumble around in Classic before I manage to find the Templates Management. I cannot find it at all right now. I've followed these instructions (https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/how-to-add-a-new-feature-template-for-use-in-arcgis-fi...) and I've tried in multiple different web maps that I know I have used Template Management in before. I can't find that Manage button anywhere.
With regards to Duplicate and Update in Field Maps Designer - It's not actually updating the fields available in the features. It updates the templates available, it updates the data entered into each field to create the feature as a template, it does not update any new fields that may be in the feature. Like the Create function used to. I've just stepped through this workflow again and got it to work. I'm not sure why it didn't the first time. And I still can't find Template Management in Classic.
Don't think you can 'find' it in an existing web map anymore.
Need to go to the item details page, then from the drop down, select Open in Map Viewer Classic and you should see the Edit/Manage Buttons......

Please re-read the OP. I have posted this thread to question why the thing you have told me to do doesn't work. My initial post contains a Map Viewer Classic workflow that I have stated I followed and couldn't get to work.
Ok, but by your comment above "I've tried in multiple different web maps that I know I have used Template Management in before. I can't find that Manage button anywhere.", it sounded like you were trying to use the 'old' method that doesn't work anymore since it is no longer available in existing web maps.
However, I have 'never' seen the "Add New Type of Feature" options as @EmilyGeo states above. Have always just used the duplicate option.

Yeah, I've come back to this a handful of times now and followed a handful of different suggested methods to access template management. I can't get access.
I have found another post from someone in the same boat as me. Tech support have told them they need to republish.
Hi @BlakeMorrison,
I'm sorry you're still having technical difficulties. To manage templates in Map Viewer Classic, can you try the following workflow instead of opening the web map:
Do you see the Manage button?
To manage templates in Map Viewer:
It sounds like perhaps you added new fields to the layer that you want to appear in the templates. First, add your new field(s) to the form, then manage templates.
@EmilyGeo Just in case you can't see it, there is a screenshot of Map Viewer Classic in the exact position that you have taken your screenshot, and the Manage button is not visible. So yeah I'm in Classic, but the Manage button isn't visible.
The initial problem I ran into, but have since overcome: I updated a view layer but the new fields I added to the view were not appearing in the Templates Management of Field Maps Designer/Map Viewer. This was an issue as the Duplicate button doesn't update the template, it just duplicated the same template with missing features. I couldn't see an Update button anywhere either. There must have been some type of hiccup in the backend or maybe I did something wrong somewhere, but I re-updated the view and it all worked as expected. I'm still very skeptical of not having a 'Create template' button as I've run into other issues in the past which that button has solved.
@RhettZufelt Thanks for trying.
Apologies, @EmilyGeo and @RhettZufelt . I have since been given the explanaton that this is a known bug and that I need to edit the Template of the FS rather than the webmap.
I came back to this thread to fill you guys in, but upon re-reading it appears you already knew this. I just didn't understand that either of your instructions were instructions to perform a different action. Rather, I thought I was being given different instructions to perform the same action.
And yeah, sorry I don't know what the "old" method was referring to and could only guess based on my own knowledge and context, to which I inferred you were talking about something different again.
So previously I was under the impression that Templates were stored in a web map and related to the symbology of a particular layer. Is the situation different now? Did I misunderstand the situation before?
