How can I block editing to the shape files that I have added to my map in ArcGIS Online. I have deselected the check boxes in the edit option for popup attributes, this is the only place I have found so far to control editing. When I view the map in AGO, zoom to and edit are both options in the pop up. Zoom to is fine but I do not want to give my users editing options at all - where is the control for this for added shape file content? I can see on the new hurricane Irene map that the edit is not showing on the pop ups for the map points. How do we do this?
Thanks.

Currently, you can't remove it. We have talked about providing an option, however.

On the plus side, anyone who does edit the map can't actually overwrite your map. They can only do a "Save as" to save it as their own map.

Thanks Mike for the helpful reply, I hope that Esri can provide the option soon. Is there anywhere that I can request or vote for it to be a priority?

For my two cents' worth, it does not look very professional to have the editing option on my webmap when not intended. It is likely to confuse the users. Also I noticed that the attribute field alias names from the pop up definitions do not display in the edit window - the user is exposed to limited original field names from the shape file attribute table.  😞

The only place to vote is on the ideas site...

But I hear what you are saying, and agree it would be nice to disable editing. Now, would you expect that on each layer or on the map as a whole?

You might also experiment with embedding the map or creating your own application from a template instead. Here's a link to an application template that references the map. Note there is no editing capability.
