I really like the upload option.  Is there a way that I can download my data after I've uploaded it and others have done some editing to it?

Thanks.

Well, I really don't want to upload until I can download.  Any guess of when the download functionality might be available?

I've got one applicaiton that would benefit greatly from community editing.  It's a neighborhood food collection project run by volunteers.

Thanks.

The next version of arcgis desktop (10.1) will have improved support for reading web maps. Any data stored in the map (like shapefiles and csvs) will become feature layers that later can be exported.

I will point out, however, that community editing is only really supported for data that you've created a service from. Either you have ArcGIS Server and you publish a feature service yourself, or you have purchased a subscription to ArcGIS Online (coming next year) that will allow you to create a hosted service from your data.

Data uploaded and stored in the web map can only be edited by the map owner. There is really no way for another person to make an edit and save it back to your map because they don't have write access to it. Now, they can make and edit and save it as their own map...

Thanks,

Mike

Does this functionality definitely exist now in 10.1 if you have an ArcGIS Online subscription?  I can't find any details about it in the help docs, but it's definitely something that is necessary so that local copies of data can incorporate edits that others make to published feature service data.

Yes, you can download a shapefile copy of a hosted feature service. It still would be a manual process to reconcile changes across two datasets. This is an area we will enhance over time...

Mike,

Thanks for responding.  I'd like to take the question one step further. Can a user upload a shape file into a map, and as the map owner edit the data (say out in the field), and later back in the office download the data with the edits to their desktop, or is this functionality still only available through a feature service layer?

Thanks,
Chris
