Beyond default symbols - Can't add layer package to map from My Content

Question

Dear All -
In reading through past discussions I know going a couple of years back you can't add a layer package to an ArcGIS Online map from My Content. Is that still the case? I search for the layer package to add but it never finds it.

If you still can't do the add - how can I simply symbolize an uploaded .shp online? Can I use a layer file (.lyr)?  Can I upload a custom palette?

Jim,

For lines and polygons, all you can change are the color, transparency and outline color (polygons). For points, you can additionally use a custom point symbol defined by a web accessible image. That's it.

Thanks for response. Yes, I can add a zipped shp file. But failing being able to add a layer package with my symbology, is there another way to use symbols in arcgis online that go beyond the default symbol palette provided? Is there anything akin to a .lyr file in Online?

JimYou can't add a layer package to a web map. This will not change. What you can do is add a shapefile or CSV directly to a web map. From the arcgis.com map viewer, click the Add menu button and add a layer from a file. You can upload a shapefile with roughly 1000 features in it (it depends on the geometry of the features). You'll be able to symbolize the shapefile from the web map.

If you want to upload larger datasets, then your option is to purchase a subscription to ArcGIS Online. With a subscription, you can have ArcGIS Online host your data, creating web services out of them.
