ArcGis Online - unable to add a layer from "My Content"

Help appreciated on the following basic thing I cannot figure out when using ArcGis online.
I have uploaded several layers to arcgis online, and they show correctly in the "My Content" section of Arcgis Online.
Some are marked as "favorite"
I can correctly open them in ArcGis 10.2
I then create a new arcgis online map, and try to add them to my map, using the "add" button, choosing "Search for layers" in  "My Favorites" or "My Content" and the right keyword (or no keyword at all)
But: no layers are shown at any time!
The "within map area" checkbox is unchecked.
I have looked all over and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.
The layers are in the correct projection.

Han,

What type of layer is it that you are trying to add?  Layers you can add are map, image, and feature service layers; KML documents; and OGC web services.  Other �??layers�?� that are actually items like a PDF, web map or an application will not show up.  Check out the help documentation below for more information on the types of layers you can search for and add.
