I've done my first update to my ArcGIS.com map since the latest AGOL update (December, 2013) and the tabs under "Details" is defaulting to the "Legend" tab everytime. Previously, I could save the tab to "About" or "Content".

Is this something new that is not mentioned in the latest update notes?

Cheers

This is something that is new. If you are not the owner of the map, it will open on the legend tab instead of the about tab.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, and users hate it!  Every call I get (many) ask why the map does not open with the content list available.  First time users are generally clueless about navigating the app and complain that the online help has too much detail.

Hi.  I just wanted to throw in that we've had the same experience with users.  We've got new users contacting us asking how to turn layers on and off.  For us, the legend is less useful as a default.

Thanks.

I too agree the contents tab may be more useful. However ideally the map owner/creator could set the default tab as a setting of the web map. I have submitted this to ArcGIS Ideas here:

Please promote if you feel Esri should look into enabling this functionality.

Hi.  I posted on this earlier but wanted to mention that we continue to get calls and complaints about requested layers not in the web maps we've created or that the web map is useless because users can't toggle layers on and off.  Can anyone share how you educated your users about using the "About" and "Content" buttons.  The look and feel of those buttons don't appear to be intuitive to our users.

Thanks,

I would say as an organization we have had difficulty doing that. Even savvy users and internal staff we've tested with seem to have trouble. Unfortunately in today's age if people can't find it quick they usually leave. In my organization we promote our AGOL page via twitter and other social media. We have blog posts and 1 page infographics on AGOL use. Those are decent places to demonstrate certain functions. An immediate pop-up on open of any web map would be great!!!!! We could have a disclaimer, point to contents tab, or have room for any text or images they could see and would have to close to see the map (maybe another ArcGIS Idea submission?).

I'm a believer in using the various channels available to get Esri to make changes. Again, I have posted the idea to allow web map owner/admin to set the default details tab to whatever we want (about, contents, or legend). So please use either link below to vote it up; hopefully Esri can add that functionality in their next update.
