When you select the "Open Map in ArcGIS 10 For Desktop" option, it asks if you want to save or open the file. Either way, I get the error "Could not open the specified file". I created this map by adding zipped shapefiles. I don't understand what ArcGIS.com is doing when it re-packages the data to send it to a desktop install. Any ideas on why it is not working and how I can make this work? Thanks!
I'm not sure why you are seeing an error. I believe the file should open. However, even if it were to successfully open, ArcGIS Desktop doesn't support all content in a web map. So your shapefiles won't be drawn. This is addressed at version 10.1, releasing soon.
Cindy's map opened fine in the ArcGIS.com map viewer so I tried to open it using ArcGIS for Desktop 10.0 SP4.
I did not get the error she reported, but all that appeared was the base map (World_Topo_Map) rather than her trails, which presumably are in an uploaded shapefile and not supported until 10.1.
