Retain (but dont use) full symbology when loading features into AGOL for ArcPro clients

ArcGIS Online understandably has a limited subset of renderer settings compared to ArcGIS Pro.  When loading a map from ArcGIS Pro any advanced symbology settings are downgraded for use in ArcGIS Online.  Currently if the AGOL layer were to subsequently be loaded onto another ArcGIS Pro client that client will only see the downgraded AGOL symbology, even though ArcGIS Pro can handle the full symbology set.   I would like to see if it is possible to retain the full symbology settings so that ArcGIS Pro clients can see the map as originally intended.

For Example:

  1. A map is authored in ArcGIS Pro with the complete set of symbology settings.
  2. That map is shared to ArcGIS Online.
  3. ArcGIS Online displays only the subset of symbology settings.
  4. A user loads the ArcGIS Online map into ArcGIS Pro.
  5. When loading the layer into ArcGIS Pro, users can see the full set of symbology settings as it was set up in the original map.   This is different from the current behavior where ArcGIS Pro users can only see the ArcGIS Online subset of symbology settings.

Issues:

  • Some users may not want this behavior (at least not on all of their maps) as this may require loading fonts into ArcGIS Online.  Therefore this should be an optional setting.
  • Some symbology settings do not translate that well into ArcGIS Online.  For example, a line symbol that contains a green line and a black casing might just turn into black line in AGOL.  Users need to author the map in ArcGIS Pro specifically to account for these caveats in the  ArcGIS Online renderer.  This effectively removed the full symbology features on the ArcGIS Pro map, thus eliminating the need for this feature.  ESRI would need to figure out a way for the map author to control what the map would look like in ArcGIS Pro as well as ArcGIS Online.  This may be too complicated.
