I just came to the ideas forum to post something like this! Would be great to import a layer file to set symbology etc, and would save so much time when creating view layers.
Yes. We would like this functionality as well.
The official answer is "no" https://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000012452 That is a significant barrier to hosting data on AGOL. Which is costing Esri lost revenue (opportunity cost)
There is a way apparently: https://community.esri.com/groups/arcgis-python-api/blog/2019/04/09/updating-layer-symbology-with-th...
Just needs a button on an Item page to do this script, above.
Uniform symbology would also help: https://community.esri.com/ideas/16228-have-the-same-symbology-across-arcgis-pro-arcmap-portal-for-a...
Stunning omission from AGOL functionality IMO. Iterating and updating layers in longer term projects is made sooooo much more tedious by needing to apply customized symbols manually every time a layer in a web map is replaced with an updated version.
I also second this functionality. It's a bit backwards to be able to edit hosted features directly in Pro, but not have the ability to change its symbology.
Agree with all of the above. If I'm making a map in Arc Online, it's because I wanted to make a map in Arc Online - not because I wanted to go back and forth between Online and Pro. Stunning omission indeed.
Yes Please.
I primarily work in cross-organizational collaboration, and when receiving data from a collaborator to host It would be BEST if I could leverage the data owner's preferred symbology.
I support the request of the OP, if its possible to program in AGOL.
Use Case: Pulling hosted features off AGOL for modification of domains / subtypes / fields etc.. in ArcPro then rehosting as a new HFL.
Desired workflow: existing HFL in AGOL could be used to symbolize the newly hosted / updated HFL in AGOL. Ideally this option would be on the visualization tab and also available in the new Map Viewer.
This would be a useful feature, I support it.
