AI assistants settings for custom roles in AGOL

Currently the AI assistant settings in ArcGIS Online only allow administrators to turn the assistants on or off for the entire organization.  We would like to see control for use of AI assistants as a privilege that could be controlled for custom roles.  The organization-wide setting would still be useful in that it could control whether the default roles (Publisher, Data Editor, etc.) have access to AI assistants.

In our case, we want to enable AI assistants for a subset of our named users (who have a custom role) but that is not possible with the way the settings exist right now.  Our organization is not ready to enable the AI assistants for all users with access to the site.

Hi Jay

Thanks for the comment on the AI Assistants.

Do you see this as being a switch in the custom roles configuration dialog box?

Something like shown below?

Hi Andy,

This is something our organisation is interested in too. Ideally we would like to configure AI assistant settings for each role.

Is this being looked into?

Right - Ideally there would be custom role options for each of the individual AI assistants. I can see situations where we would want to enable certain AI assistants for certain types of users, especially once the assistants move out of beta and begin consuming credits.

This would prove handy as our organization requires AI training before we can use it in general. Right now, nobody can use it because we can't control who is using it and who isn't.

I added an idea to have a more granular approach to the AI Assistance based on the app (Survey123 vs. Experience Builder vs. StoryMaps), currently it is All or nothing.

Status changed to: Under Consideration

Changing status to 'In Consideration'.  Potentially (subject to change) targeting the R1 update of ArcGIS Online in 2026 and ArcGIS Enterprise 12.1.

New role privilege: Use AI assistants. Available in Online and Enterprise. Complements AI assistants org setting and application-specific AI assistant admin controls.

Thanks all for your feedback.

@IsmaelChivite That is great to hear! I would also encourage the team to look at enabling role permissions on a per-assistant basis, as @RichardN suggests above.
