Network Analyst travel restrictions for an emergency vehicle (police car)

Hi,

I am using network analyst.  I am using the closest facility and I am in the section where I choose restrictions.  In my analysis the facilities are police cars and incidents are schools.

I would like the police cars to have zero restrictions so they can travel the fastest time to the schools.

If I select Driving an emergency vehicle how should the parameters be set?  Or should I not select any restrictions and just leave them all unchecked and blank.

I am looking for the total travel time from facility (police car) to incident (schools).

Thanks,

Carrie

It depends on what kind of restrictions are present in your network dataset. There may be some you could turn off and some you may want to leave on. For example, you could turn off one-way's and turn restrictions off but you have no way of knowing how fast you can travel the wrong way on a one-way restricted road. You may not want to turn off bike lanes or dirt roads as the police vehicle may not be able to use those lanes. So in general you should route with the correct travel mode and perhaps turn off some restrictions such as turns. You can also as the local police drivers what restrictions they are willing to ignore to get somewhere fast.

Hi Jay,  Thanks for getting back to me.  The police have told me they want zero restrictions.  So would that mean I leave everything turned off/ unchecked?

Basically yes. But I would still look at each restriction and understand what you are turning off as you do so.

Jay
