BIS alternative in ArcGIS Pro for generating contours and soundings for Chart Production

Hi everyone,

Could anyone explain on higher level how to import all available raster datasets to sort of BIS db and generate compiled mosaic surface with ascending Survey Date order? I remember full workflow on older version of the ArcMap when I had dedicated GDB for BIS on SQL server.It was fairly straight forward process of adding all source rasters into BIS with proper metadata and then continue with extraction of soundings and reducing density and etc.

But nowadays after migration to ArcGIS Pro in 2023 I can't remember what is the alternative workflow for the mosaic surface generation part.

I would highly appreciate your ideas and suggestions on how to complete this task in ArcGIS Pro.

Hello - good for you to upgrade to Pro! You should upgrade to Pro 3.5 if you can, as there are many improvements since 2023. I deployed empty Enterprise Geodata base on SQL server to store BIS datamodel. Now, I am working on Importing BIS schema to empty DB on server. What schema I should use for a BIS?

There are two options that I am concerned about (please see screenshot):

1. main.BisCatalog_schema

2. main.BisCatalog_bag_schema

What schema should I choose? Is it mandatory to have BAG file in our BIS database or I can use GeoTiffs as well for chart production?

I created new Enterprise DB on SQL Server and tried to create BIS on this DB using the schema (main.BisCatalog_schema) as described in documentation. But for some reason I am unable to do it because of the error below. Could you please advise why I can not complete this task with the DB on SQL Server?

Hello Nauryzbek,

It is definitely not mandatory to have BAG files in your BIS repository. If you work solely with GeoTiffs, that is just fine. If you don't/won't have BAG files, you can just use the basic main.BisCatalog_schema and add any of your custom metadata fields to it.

Is the connection you are using a data owner connection? Are you able to create a simple table in the SDE database?

Hi. Yes I have DBO (database owner rights on server). Please see screenshot in attachment. I am able to create tables or any other type of datasets on database.

It actually worked perfect with NIS when I did similar action with importing schema to new enterprise geodatabase. I am not sure why there is a problem with BIS creation on server.

Software:
SQL Server version 2019
ArcGIS ver 3.4.3 (the same problem on ver 3.5)
Win 10 Enterprise x64 (ver 22H2)
