It would be great if you could create view layers from ArcGIS online living atlas layers. I would like to do this so I can could set spatial filters on national datasets to only show data relevant to my area without loading in the whole dataset. As far as I am aware, the only way I can think to do this is to save a copy of the layer to add my filters too - this then disconnects it from the source and means we would have to put in place a process to update the layer to stay current. This could be proportionate is some cases, but in many where living atlas layers are used for context, this is disproportionate.
Perhaps this will work until other alternatives evolve...
If the Living Atlas content you are using has attributes that you can use to zero in on your area of interest, then if you apply the appropriate filter(s) and save the layer, the filter is persisted in your local layer and the layer still points to the Living Atlas source.
You can't do this an arbitrary spatial area, but this works great for content that has attributes you can use to filter down to the geography you are interested in.
For example, here's demographic data from Living Atlas - obviously nationwide in coverage:
Here's the same layer with filters applied for the block groups covering Redlands only and saved as a local layer:
Good blog on this very topic: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-living-atlas/mapping/make-an-acs-map-fast As Bern indicates, this simple method is merely a filter on the original layer, but when you hit Save on your web map your filter is saved and the layer is still pointing to the original source. Very efficient.
