In our Indoor Viewer when someone enters a search code (for example "1234") in the search bar and immediately hits the return key, they are taken to room 1234 at one of our campuses.  If they enter "1234" in the search bar and do not hit return, they get a list of all the places that match that search parameter.

The drop-down list is preferred, but users naturally hit the return key after putting in a search term.

I suggest users always get the drop-down list - whether they hit return or not.

Result of search if the return key is used: the user is taken to the first matched item, even if it's not what they are looking for.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard from users, "The map automatically zooms to the wrong feature".  Come to find out, they are hitting the enter key and it's selecting to the first candidate.
