what software do I need to be able to have such processes in ArcGIS Mobile 10

I think the key is using the Trimble GPS Controller software to output NMEA from the Trimble GPS hardware. I have not been able to do this yet. So far ArcGIS Mobile 10 will not recognize the NMEA output. I think the problem is in the NMEA output settings.

I was able to improve the captured accuracy of ArcGIS Mobile by hooking into the State of Ohio's VRS(Virtual Reference Stations) provided by ODOT for free.

Using the 2.41 GPS Controller on the Trimble 6000 series, you can tap into VRS without needing any other extensions.

This allowed me to achieve 4 inch accuracy with ArcGIS Mobile. I was able to capture an existing point with ArcGIS Mobile and it was within 1cm of the same shot done with ArcPad.

The only catch is you need to have the output to NMEA turned on. Since Esri only reads and interprets raw NMEA strings.

Once we turned on that option inside the 6000 series it worked like a charm. Given some of the limitations involved with cartography at ArcGIS Mobile 10.0 we could not roll it into production but the concept worked so I know it is possible.

I am waiting to see some of the improvements supposedly coming in 10.1 for Mobile. I just ran into too many bugs and limitations but it certainly seems useful for simple project like attribute editing in its current form.

I think Trimble is doing some integration with ArcGIS Mobile starting at the 10.1 release. I would imagine they will unveil this at the Esri UC.

The software available from Trimble is called Trimble Positions Software Suite. ESRI released ArcGIS for Mobile 3.1 yesterday (10th September 2012) which now has integrated support for Trimble Positions Software that allows for higher accuracy data collection than without it. This does of course mean additional cost for the purchase of Trimble Positions!
