Cannot add the worksheet to ArcGIS for Excel after previously sharing it online

Hello there,

I have a worksheet which works fine with ArcGIS for Excel. Yesterday, i tried the 'Share' option to share it to ArcGIS online (not shared to public).  Afterwards, I have deleted and permanently deleted the hosted feature layer and the map on ArcGIS Online.  

Today when I am trying to open ArcGIS for Excel, I get the error that I can no longer add the worksheet as "Data already belongs to a hosted ArcGIS layer."

What should I do? Thanks!

Good morning! Great question, can you confirm when you try to add data from ArcGIS Online in Excel you do not see your deleted layer (the one you previously shared)? You may also clear your browser cache. 

I will test this on my end as well and report back.

I was able to reproduce your issue @tcyd, I will work with my team to determine a path forward.

This bug will be fixed in Q4 (tentatively mid-October).

Thank you for your help!  Really appreciated.

Do you happen to identify an interim workaround for the issue?  I have tried copying the excel file (either the file; or the values only) to a new excel file/computer and that didn't work.  Meanwhile, I have not figured a way to completely uninstall ArcGIS for Excel (which I believe, by then copying the values from the original excel to a new excel would work (?)).

The current workaround is to copy the data, then paste it to another sheet using "Paste with Values". See example - 

Please note, any formatting will be lost. Keep me posted if this workaround is successful.

Thank you for posting. I am seeing this bug fixed, however, I think there may be a step missing in the workflow. See my video below - 

You will still see the same message - Data already belongs to a hosted layer unless you delete the layer from the TOC. 

1. Add a layer from Excel
2. Share the layer to AGOL/Enterprise
3. Delete the layer from the map
4. Try to add the layer from Excel again
