How to replicate Survey123 cascading selects in Field Maps

I have a matrix of values that I want to present to the user via a series of combo boxes, to help narrow down a location. In Survey123 this is achieved in an elegant way using data in an XLS with cascading selects used to restrict a list of available answers based on the answer to a previous question.

How can I best achieve the same thing in Field Maps (using Arcade)?

As of the May 2022 update to Field Maps, you can utilize contingent values to narrow down a choice list based on the choice in another question. It's the main focus of the "what's new" article here:
