Field Maps (Android) crashing while streaming vertices, zooming in/out, or doing nothing on Samsung Galaxy Tab

I am wondering if Field Maps crashing is a common experience for others, or if we're somehow special.

We have been using the latest version of Field Maps on Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE tablets running Android 14 since June, and we continue to have issues where the software crashes when we are doing one of three things:

  • Streaming line or polygon vertices (set to stream every 1m, per our requirement)
  • Zooming in and out
  • Nothing at all...just walking around with the map open on our tablet, till we look down and see it's crashed

Sometimes it's a "soft" crash...we just need to tap on the Field Maps icon, and the map comes back up with the current map open and all the layers adjusted the way we'd adjusted them. Sometimes it's a "hard" crash, and we have to reopen the map and do whatever we need to do to set up which layers are visible, which are not, and filter layers as needed.

We experience all three issues regardless of whether we are working online or offline.

I really thought that working offline would help with the zoom crashes, but it hasn't helped. Our background layer is World Imagery (for Export) for both online and offline, though we have also tried sideloading our own imagery and we get the same crashing issues when zooming.

Users report that Field Maps never crashes when they use it on their phones (iOS or Android). But they don't use their personal phones often for work, so it could just be good luck.

We have open tickets with Esri Support to try to understand the issues. So far no luck.

I am very curious if regular crashing (usually <10x/day) of Field Maps is just considered normal. Please let me know if you have any feedback on this!

Before tightening up my feature layers and switching to iOS, I was having similar issues.

Did you ever get this resolved?

We experienced a lot fewer issues using a Mesa 3 Android and an iPad mini - same maps, same workflows. We plan to do more testing in the next few weeks using a handful of devices we have on loan to try out. So far it really does seem to be an issue with the Samsung Galaxy struggling.

I found iPads to work exponentially better than the Samsung Galaxy.

Sounds like you've got the right idea by testing multiple different devices. It is frustrating in the beginning, stick with it!
