We love the ArcGIS Online Global Earth Scene especially for presentations, as most of our research work covers large parts of the northern hemisphere and down to the equator. We use it both for StoryMaps and smaller web applications.
However, we would like there was an opportunity to be able to turn on atmospheric effects with clouds when zoomed further out, so that it gives a more realistic picture of the earth and its atmosphere.
In addition, we also miss an opportunity to be able to lock the position of the sun on the Earth, so when you spin the Earth you can show the day and the night cycle on the different sides of the globe. At the moment you can only set time and day for the sun, but when moving the earh, the sun does not stay fixed on that position.
Hello @cbp-geus ,
As far as I am concerned, ArcGIS Earth does have these two features.
Activating atmosphere and the scene would be like:
Additionally, enabling daylight would allow you to adjust the time slider to simulate the sun effect at a specific time.
Meanwhile, ArcGIS Earth can also display web scene and scene services with more features supported. Hope this helps.
Bing'An
Hi @BingAnChen,
Thank you for these suggestions. Yes, these functionalities are more or less what we are looking for, but we are however looking for these functions for the ArcGIS Online Global Scene. I apologize if this forum was more specific for the ArcGIS Earth application product and not also for the online version. On the other hand, we would like that both the ArcGIS Earth app and the ArcGIS Online version of the Global Earth Scene had more or less identical functions. As far as we can see they are not.
One example is when setting the exact time and date for the daylight function on the ArcGIS Earth app, the sun is fixed on its position even when you spin the earth, whereas for the ArcGIS Online version the sun and time changes constantly when spinning the earth which makes it difficult to present.
For the atmospheric effect, we don’t see that same global effect anywhere on the ArcGIS Online Global Scene. It would also make a nice addition, if there were the option for some cloud cover effect, especially when presenting climatic data areas in the northern hemisphere.
However, when making a scene near the ground for the exact same day and time, the ArcGIS Online Global Scene has a more nice and realistic atmospheric effect.
