I just purchased a new ArcGIS Desktop Advanced 10.8.1. Are there recommended patches to download and apply?

Esri Support ArcMap 10.8 (10.8.1)

doesn't seem to be any. But you can look around the site to see if there other associated products that you are using

... sort of retired...
