I would love to be able to search on other layers I have in my webmap for collector, not just the layer I am editing
Hi Matt -- You can search layers that are configured for search in the map. Please see Configure feature search—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS for details on how to do so. Would that enable the type of search you are looking for?
Yes, that is what leads me to believe it should work in collector, as it works in AGOL when I set up the webmap like that. But when it gets to collector, I do not see any way to change the layer I want to search on.
You don't need to change the layer; just enter your search string and Collector will search with the place search and layers.
Wow! Intriguing! Unfortunately when I put something in the search box and hit enter it closes the collector program rather suddenly.
What platform are you working on, and what version of Collector are you using? Is it a map you can share publically?
I am on iOS 10. I am assuming the latest greatest of collector. I keep
everything updated.

Great, I can see your map. I've made a copy to test with. Are you working online or offline when you see the crash?
Could you also provide the string you are searching for that shows you the crash?

I am usually online when it fails, though I have been offline and it fails, I have never been successful with it. My search string is Hawthorne
Thanks Matt! I tried that string, and I get no results, but no crash, either. I'm testing on a different version of iOS though -- I will try on iOS 10 soon. I will keep you posted!

Hi All,
Just to help with the suspense, I have been able to make this work with an Android device, but both Apple devices I have, iPhone and iPad at iOS 10.2.2, when trying the search in collector it just instantly shuts down. I have tried re-installing collector with, however I have the same result. I have also created a new webmap, however it still gives the same result. ESRI staff have been super helpful, but I think we are at a detente, well detente is a little strong, but I would say I don't see a path forward yet.
