Option to disable geometry editing in Collector/Field Maps at map level

I have a layer that is used in multiple different maps and tools.  It is used in Collector for updating attributes in the field and is used in a web app for desktop geometry editing.

Currently the field guys are accidently editing the shape of the layer while in the field (rather than just the attributes).  

It would be great to have finer control of editing capabilities within the map/Collector to turn on/off geometry editing.

Create a view layer from the original feature service and then enable attribute editing only:

@David_Brooks suggestion only seems to work with hosted feature layers.

Agree with @AndrewBowne, all our layers are reference from the database, eliminating the ability to create a hosted view layer. Is there a way to accomplish this without publishing a second version and creating another service?
