In the past my colleagues and I have utilized BAO Retail MarketPlace reports to gather retail leakage/surplus data for custom geographies. It seems like this report has disappeared from the options menu and I found some older threads suggesting the data was out of date and not reflective of current commerce trends (e.g. e-commerce). Is the Leakage/Surplus data no longer accessible anywhere in BAO?
ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App was recently updated with the 2022 Esri Demographics in 2020 Census geography. This June 2022 release of ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App contains major updates to U.S. demographic content, including the most recent data from the 2020 U.S. Census, 2016-2020 American Community Survey (ACS) variables, and crosswalks for several variables from the 2000 and 2010 Census.
The Retail Marketplace was not updated to the 2020 Census-based geographies. The last update to the Retail Marketplace was the 2017 data brought into 2010 geography*. With the recent release of our 2022 updates in 2020 Census geography, the report has been removed. However, you still have access to the 2017 data in 2010 geography in BA Web. For more information, please take a look at this blog: Migrate custom Business Analyst content to 2022 Esri Demographics and video.
Thank you for using ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App!

* The reason for this is the changing face of retail. Retail MarketPlace was developed during a marketplace with little e-commerce, using data sources that cannot adequately differentiate e-commerce sales from store-front sales. As the proportion of e-commerce sales grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to model retail sales at the local level. In terms of a substitution, our data development team realizes the importance of this database to our customers and are actively looking for data sources to create a suitable model. Unfortunately, there is no timetable for if or when new data will be available.
Hi Alice,
This question relating to using the Retail MarketPlace report to analyze retail leakages has come up again within my organization. I wanted to follow up to see if anyone at Esri had found alternative data sources to create a new model; is anything planned for the future that you are aware of - or nothing in foreseeable future? I have been asked to explore possible alternative data sources and wanted to follow up on this thread.
Thank you for any feedback,
Kimberly Heaton
