I know nothing about App studio, I am an AutoCad guy. But I have been asked to build an app interactive map for trail riding. My daughter is a GIS person and can do the mapping but we need a person to either build the app or help us with the app build. Also need a provide a cost to the atv clubs that are requesting the interactive map. Where can I find people to assist with this?

Thanks,

Al S.

Hi Alan:

Thank you for asking the question in our GeoNet community, May I know what kind of features are required for your app. Offline maps? Tracking the ATV route? Showing some specific information, etc? We have a few ready-to-use configurable AppStudio templates that might fit your need.

Thanks,

Tina

Hi Tina,

Yes we need a off line map for phone or tablets, track an individuals

location with in the trail system, and links to sponsors website/facebook

pages. We want to show trails(through woods) and route (roads open to ATV

travel). need it broke out by county and township, a some townships have

different laws. What is the learning curve to use the app?

Hi Alan,

Map Viewer template might be a good option. It is one of the configurable AppStudio templates. You can configure it without writing any code or add completely new functionality through code.

What's Map Viewer template?

The Map Viewer template can display your web maps and offline mobile map packages into a native app. In your case, you will need to put trails and route into online web maps or offline mobile map packages. The only thing that Map Viewer currently can't do is track individuals location (You will need to write code for this function).

What does the Map Viewer template look like?

1. To view Map Viewer in Desktop -  Download latest AppStudio Desktop (4.0) > New app button > Templates > Create a Map Viewer template

2. To view Map Viewer in a mobile device - Download AppStudio Player from Google Play or Apple App Store > Sign in with your AGOL or Enterprise account or Skip sign in > Samples page > TEMPLATES > Preview National Park Trails (Map Viewer) app.

How to configure a Map Viewer template?

It is straightforward to configure a Map Viewer template. You can check this online help documentation or this tutorial video to learn how to configure a Map Viewer template.

I hope the above information will help you, and please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Tina

Hi Tina,

I have oh so many questions. My daughter is a GIS person at her Job, I have

no GIS nor App experience. Several local ATV clubs have got together and

want this app. They have asked My daughter and I to provide them with the

interactive downloadable map. So we are not a huge company with unlimited

funds, but rather a father daughter try do something for our local clubs.

1. What is the cost for the GIS, and app software? is this a yearly

subscription?

2. Can we both use the same seat? Or if it is online can we both use the

same log in? Once we have the app I only see us using this once a month to

update.

3. If we build the app must we maintain a software licence in order from

the app to remain active, or if we end our subscription does the app stop

working?

4. We are looking to cover our costs, but the clubs are looking to sell

advertising on the app, like a restaurant would pay to have there location

on the map. Can this be done? does this add to the cost of the software?

I need to get a cost for this to our local clubs next week but have no idea

what it will cost nor how much time it will take. any input from you or

your team on avg. hours to do something like this would be very helpfull.

Thank You,

Al Schulz

Hi Al,

I will do my best to answer your questions.

   1. What is the cost for the GIS, and  app software? is this a yearly

   subscription?

To build an app that will be in the app stores (Apple, Google) you will need a license for "AppStudio Developer Edition", which you can get by subscribing to an ArcGIS Developer Subscription. See this link https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/appstudio-for-arcgis/buy . (click on Developer Edition at the top.

   2. Can we both use the same seat? Or if it is online can we both use the

same log in? Once we have the app I only see us using this once a month to

   update.

The license is for s single user.

   3. If we build the app must we maintain a software licence in order from

the app to remain active, or if we end our subscription does the app stop

   working?

No, the app does not stop working if you developer subscription ends. But our users tend to keep the developer subscription as inevitably they will want updates to the app.

   4. We are looking to cover our costs, but the clubs are looking to sell

advertising on the app, like a restaurant would pay to have there location

on the map. Can this be done? does this add to the cost of the software?

Yes this can be done but it will take writing some custom code to accomplish this, also if someone will be making money from ads in the app you will need to buy a Commercial Qt software license https://www.qt.io/download . (this is third party software that we use in AppStudio.

I need to get a cost for this to our local clubs next week but have no idea

what it will cost nor how much time it will take. any input from you or

your team on avg. hours to do something like this would be very helpfull.

It is difficult to estimate the avg time to do something like this, the biggest factor is probably the technical skill level of the person doing the work.  Because we are talking about some custom code...For professional developer it would take weeks to do this.  If you are a GIS professional with some scripting or maybe web development skills it would many weeks (over a month)

If you primary purpose is to povide offline maps to members of the ATV club you might want to consider other options.  Example: You could use our desktop software ArcGIS Pro to create an offline Mobile Map Package and then share that with others so they can download it and view it using the Explorer for ArcGIS app published by Esri.
