Hi there.

I have a two point shape files. One of which contains thousands of points, the other a small number of points. I would like to select and extract the data of the nearest point only to the second data set.

can anyone please suggest a way to do this?

many thanks.

Hi, thanks for the advise. Running the ‘near’ tool only gives me a proximity. When I’m after a selection or an extraction.

In the image, the yellow points are my location and I’m trying to select the nearest purple point only to each yellow.

unfortunately there is no "select the closest" without some work.

If you had a threshold distance value to work with then

Select Layer By Location (Data Management)—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

"within a distance of" would do the job.

Otherwise,  Near does the work and finding the closest from the result will provide the data.

Also, what about ties?

maximum distance to consider?

What if two points share the same closest? is that ok?
