Problems with ArcScene Rendering

Am just trying out ArcMap 10.  First trial with the thought in mind of trying out the new 3D edit tools - something doesn't work!  I started a new ArcScene project, imported a few 3D wellbores (as multipatch features created in v.9.2) and proceeded to symbolize as I have done tens of times before in 9.2, 9.3.  I used to be able to symbolize with either solid colors or texture patches (in this case created from the USGS symbol set) and by adjusting the render settings in the layer TOC (Azimuth: 90, Altitude:0, Contrast:0)I got nice, even, smooth patches that represented the subsurface layering quite well.  What I get now is garbage.  The depiction is anything but clear: overall muddy, and including a covering of "sine waves" that masks everything below.  If no color or texture is applied, each layer presents itself with a gradational, top-to-bottom, dark-to-light, gray coloring which resembles the crinoid stems we used to have to draw by hand in Basic Historical Geology!  The attached image displays both conditions.

The hardware config is the same for 9.x and 10 so that shouldn't be of concern.  Please advise.
