Converting a raster DEM into contours

Hi there, am having problems converting my DEM.img into contours. When i add the DEM layer into Arcview, its not made active in the spatial analyst for me to go ahead and convert it into contours.

.img is an ERDAS native format.

I don't think that ArcGIS will recognize that as an allowable Input for your tools.


Try converting the .img file to something else, like .TIFF or an ESRI grid file (no extension on export).

Quick way to change format:
In ArcMap, right click .img file in Table of Contents
go down to Data > Export Data...
Near the bottom of the Export window you can specify the raster type (see image):
