Digital images of earth’s surface produced by remote sensing are the basis of modern mapping. They are also used to create valuable information products across a spectrum of industries. This free online course is for everyone who is interested in applications of earth imagery to increase productivity, save money, protect the environment, and even save lives.
About the Course
Earth Imagery at Work is a free, instructor-led massive open online course (MOOC) offered by Esri. The course lasts six weeks and requires one to two hours of study per week. Weekly course sections consist of a video interview by the course host, hands-on case study exercises, a quiz, a class poll and discussion, and supplementary resources. Students will receive free access to Esri’s cloud-based ArcGIS Online platform and desktop software during the course. A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the course.
When is the next offering of Earth Imagery at Work? How do I register?
The master calendar for all the MOOCs is at http://www.esri.com/mooc. Scroll to the middle of the page. You can register for the next session at http://esri.com/mooc/imagery. You should receive a confirmation e-mail from Esri right away. Closer to the course start date you will receive an invitation to begin the course. If you sign up after the course start date, it may take a few days to receive your e-mail invitation.
Will I get a certificate for the MOOC?
Students who complete the course in its entirety will receive a certificate of completion via Udemy, our partner platform for this course. Certificates are not available until all the course content is open and completed. The final section of the course opens at the beginning of week six.
How much do I need to know about imagery, GIS and Esri software?
The MOOC has no prerequisites, but some familiarity with imagery or GIS concepts may enhance your experience. If you’re new to GIS, you may find it helpful to go through the free Esri web course, Getting Started with GIS.
Do I need to have access to ArcGIS software?
No. All MOOC students will be have access to an ArcGIS Online organizational account and ArcGIS Pro desktop software. We strongly encourage all interested student to confirm they have access to a system that meets the ArcGIS Online browser requirements and the ArcGIS Pro system requirements. Students who can run ArcGIS Pro will have the best experience in the course.
Can I take the lessons at any time? Are there weekly deadlines?
You are free to work at your own pace. The course includes seven sections consisting of video lectures, exercises, quizzes, and other activities such as polls and discussions. Lesson are released weekly on Tuesdays at 12 pm Pacific Time. To plan your time, expect to spend about 1-2 hours on each section. To earn a certificate of completion, all sections must be completed within two weeks of the class end date. A course calendar can be found in this group under the "Content" tab.
How long will I have access to the content after the MOOC ends?
You will have two weeks after the session ends to finish the exercises in ArcGIS Online. After that time the ArcGIS Online accounts will be closed and the ArcGIS Pro licenses revoked. Course materials (videos, exercise PDFs, etc.) will remain available on Udemy for up to six months after that (and the Udemy content is downloadable).
Will the MOOC show up in my Esri training history?
No, your MOOC completion is recorded by Udemy and will not appear in your Esri training history at this time. We hope to include MOOCs in the training history in the future.
