Geoprocessing Tools
Hi all, I'm new to GIS for archaeology. What are some of the major geoprocessing tools that you all like to use? I'm trying to think of new ways to use GIS for archaeological inquiry. I know that's an open ended question - but trying to get some good geoprocessing tools. Thanks! Tim

Query Tables and Joins
I'm currently work on a project that connects a data sheet of artifact data to sites (polygon and points) already in Arcmap. I have used the make query table tool to connect the tables together by sites but there are sub sites so the table isn't exact and some points are missing because there are sub sites. Anyone have…

I'm working on joining a DBF file of artifacts to shape and point files of sites within ArcMap. I know I need a 1:M join to accomplish this but I can't figure out how to join them in a queryable way. Any suggestions?

Calculating volume of archaeological excavation levels from points
Hi all, I've been trying to perform what seems like it should be a fairly simple task, but I've been unable to get it to work using the simple "dummy" versions of the data I have, so I figured I'd ask here. Essentially, I need to know the volume of sediment excavated in each level of several archaeological units. The units…

Least-Cost - Wetlands
Has anybody attempted to quantify wetland data and soil data for rate of resistance to estimate least-cost pathways? Many of studies I have seen put wetlands as high values, which I do not agree with for foot travel.

Correlation between size of a point and its distance from a landscape feature?
Hi there, I have two datasets. One is a point file of features, each with different size (area) values. The second is zones on a map (polygons) which represent an agricultural land class. (I have also treated this data as a binary coverage (1 = agriculture, 0 = no agriculture, and as a raster of Euclidean distance from…

How can I keep raster values in a vector feature?
Hi all, I'm having a bit of trouble with something that i'm sure should be very simple. I have calculated the time cost of a series of paths from prehistoric sites to their nearest water sources using the cost path tool. I now want to convert the raster outputs I created to a vector polyline, but when I do, the new vector…

Is it possible that different versions of ArcMap produce different "path distance" results?
I have previously calculated the catchment areas for a series of archaeological sites. After making some minor adjustments to site locations, I now have to repeat the same calculations. The results should be very similar, but they are quite different. I'm using the same table summarizing the Tobler function in the way it…

Path Distance - Vertical Table input not working
Hello, I have ArcGIS 10.3.1 and am trying to run a Least Cost Path analysis that incorporates Toblers hiking function; however, I am unable to load the .txt document as a table in the Vertical Table parameter in the Path Distance tool. Does anyone else have that issue or know a work around? or what i may be doing wrong…

Least Cost Path unique shp origins/destinations
Hi, everyboby, I have several point in a unique shp file (I use arcmap), I would calculate the cost path (so the best rout according to the landscape surface) between all the same points each other. Is it possibile? How can I use the same shp as origins and destinations points? Or is it necessary to split the point in…

Energy based least cost path
Hi there, I am trying to generate a least cost path taking into consideration the energy (calories) expended crossing a given distance. So I need to create a friction surface, based on a slope, representing the energy needed to cross a given distance. I have made a similar surface by using the hikers equation. However, I…

Creating a shovel test grid for Cultural Resource Management
I can't find a good amount of information on creating a grid within a set boundary and using the intersection points as points for data. I work in the archaeology field and we dig shovel tests on a 50 foot grid. I am trying to figure out a way of creating a grid before entering the field, where each intersection point…

How do I predict the location of sites within a certain distance from different areas?
I'm trying to predict in which areas there might be undiscovered archaeological sites but I cannot figure out how to do this. I have a background map of a region and I would like to create a map that shows which areas of it are within 1 km of three different types of soil (I have converted these to three separate rasters).…

Finding Old Middle ages 13th Century – 16th Century map of Germany/Europe
I was wondering how I would be able to find a Old Middle ages 13th Century – 16th Century map of Germany (or at least Europe). Or any shapefiles/layers during this time period which would show the changes in political boundaries? I am making a map of it in ArcGIS Desktop.

how to calculate cost path across multiple quadrangles
When my start and destination points are in the same topo quadrangle, I am able to calculate cost path. However, when they are in different quads, it shows an error. I have tried downloading a county mosaic but they do not come in DEM (only DRG) so the slopes are wonky. I don't know how else to create a "seamless" set of…

How to manually edit attribute data onto a LiDAR point cloud using ArcGIS
Hi everyone, I am a new comer to ArcGIS. I have a LiDAR point cloud in .las format, collected using a ground based laser scanner, and I would like to manually edit four separate attribute data onto the point cloud. Essentially this means using the point cloud as a 'canvas' or base map onto which I want to add a bunch of…
