Layer distinction depending if all sub layers are toggled on or just some.

Notice in the image below, how google earth uses a different symbol when not all of the sublayers are checked on. We have found with our beginner users, many assume that if a layer is checked, all that layer is on and don't realize you can click a layer to see sub layers.
We are training, but we are also creating many of our maps for the general public to use. Some form of distinction would be
beneficial
.

This is along the same lines as one of
my ideas
- to make it more obvious in ArcGIS Online when layers aren't shown because of the scale. It's one of the many things that beginner users will miss, and make incorrect assumptions
