I would like to see the abillity to change the field names of a shapefile/ feature class.

It's possible to rename a field in a feature class in a geodatabase.

However, it doesn't look like it's possible to rename a field in shapefile. But I don't normally use shapefiles, so I could be missing something.

Field names can be changed in feature classes. Shapefile do not support directly changing field names. Refer to the below document in cases where renaming a shapefile's fields is necessary in ArcGIS Pro.
