Can't access SDE Geodatabase feature class in ArcReader 10

I have upgraded from ArcReader Version 9.3 to ArcReader Version 10. I have a PMF that was created in 9.3 that can be read with the ArcReader 9.3 but not ArcReader 10 on standard end user machines where the only ESRI software installed is ArcReader. I can read the PMF on my machine because I have full administrative rights to the Geodatabase. When I compare the source information on the ArcReader that works verses the one that doesn't there is an extra Data Source reference for password on the version that will not run. I am using a direct connect database connection using SQL Server with the "Save User Name and Password" box checked. I have also tried setting up a Windows Authentication connection and still can not get ArcReader 10 to recognize the data. For some reason the password is not getting passed to the PMF using ArcReader 10 but did work using version 9.3. There is no provision to explicitly pass this password using the Publisher Extension. I am at a loss how to proceed from here.

We have similar problems in ArcReader 10.1. Our trouble is with a particular floodplain feature class located in an SDE database. It takes forever to load. Then, when printing, it takes at least 10 minutes. Does anybody else have this issue/know a solution?

Is there a fix for ArcReader 10.1? I'm installing it on a new win7 machine and it won't connect to ArcServer data though shapefiles are fine. I don't see an SQL Native client folder on the 10.1 install disk though. Something changed? This works fine on all the other PCs, though those were upgraded from ArcReader 10.0

I had an ArcReader 10 install on a CD ROM, so I was able to find the SNaC install on that.

I know this is an old thread, but I was recently wrestling with this and thought I would post the resolution. My issue was unavailable layers in ArcReader. The map could be viewed fine on other computers, but not on one in particular. After reading the earlier replies on this thread, I determined that the issue was not having Microsoft SQL Server Native Client installed, but I couldn't figure out how or why that had happened. Then I stumbled upon this tech article:

The issue was that I installed ArcReader using the Setup msi instead of the Setup Application. Once I ran the Setup Application, SNaC installed and the map was properly viewable. As stated in the article I referenced, the SNaC won't install if the Setup msi is used to install ArcReader.

Thank you for this. I was wondering why an uninstall and install worked to fix it. Now I can just install the Native Client. Tested and works perfect.

Also make sure that the SQL Native Client is installed. This fixed my connectivity issues. It is supposed to be installed automatically with the ArcReader installation, but for some reason it didn't. You can find it in the <Install folder or drive >\Windows\support\SQLNative folder.

Also, I found this compatability matrix between clients and geodatabases for SQL Server.

Can I assume that ArcReader 10 will as a rule read a pmf created in 9.3? (Haven't found any guidance on this in ESRI help files or elsewhere in forums).

I figured out a fix for this; I went from a direct connect to an SDE service connection for the source data in my ArcMap project and ArcReader 10 was able to access the PMF fine. I was using direct connect with the 9.3 ArcReader and it worked fine. I know direct connect is the recommended method of connecting but when building a project to publish for ArcReader 10 you might want to consider the SDE service connection instead.

I had the same problem with using direct connects in ArcReader 10. Reverting back to SDE service connections fixed the problem.
