Unable to load living atlas content - mixed content error

I am currently working through the DIY GeoApps course and one of the exercises requires me to use the Analysis button to load some Living Atlas content. When I attempt to do this, I get a mixed content message.

I understand what this message is, but since this is ESRI data, and I'm using their Analysis tool to load data, I don't feel like I have any control over whether I'm loading this particular layer over http vs https.

If I try the Add Data button and select Browse Living Atlas layers, then I can successfully choose and add data this way. However, these doesn't seem to be the same choices as I have under Analysis > Enrich Layer > Choose Living Atlas Analysis Layer. Once I choose a layer, then I see the mixed content message in my console log.

I checked my organizational settings, but the security settings seem OK to me. I tried checking 'use HTTPS only', but that didn't make a difference.

Hi Tracy,

It looks like the Esri Living Atlas layers aren't switched to https in all the cases they should be (basically, if your browser is in https, all esri resources should be served to you over https as well without any additional configuration or intervention on your part). A fix for the Living Atlas layers is planned for the next update (currently scheduled for Feb 29th).

I did not have any issues getting the Living Atlas to load while going through the instructions from the DIY course. Are you logged into your Developer account? I am not sure if that makes a difference or not but they really seem to harp on that a lot.

Sometimes it may help to try a different browser or to clear your cache and web history with your current browser.

Yes, they really do!

Apparently you can't create a developer account if you have a .gov email. I contacted ESRI and their site doesn't meet certain federal guidelines. They can't distinguish between a federal .gov account and my .state.gov account.

I have access to two different organizational, but since I set both of them up myself, they are configured about the same. Neither seems terribly restrictive. I haven't been able to track down the difference in security/permissions between what you can do with a Developer account vs. an organizational one.

Sorry for responding so late. I presume you tried asking in the course itself about this issue? I also presume that you have not heard back from anyone as well... I guess with 8,000+ students they may be getting 100s of questions and it is likely hard to answer them all. In any case, I am curious to know if you have found a solution to the issue you're seeing.

Yes, I did, but I didn't get any responses. It doesn't take too long before your question scrolls out past people's view and then they don't see it. Kind of like these forums, actually.

I don't think the question is course specific anyway. I ought to be able to add data from the Living Atlas, whether I'm following along with course instructions, or just on my own.

There might be a browser setting to get past this, but that's no good either, since there's no point in developing something if my users are likely to have similar problems.

It's tough with the class being large and with this geonet missing forums and such. Sometimes that will happen to me and I will simply bump the thread back to the top in order for it to be seen again.

I have had weird issues with online content that were solved by me simply clearing my cache and things like that. I don't always like to clear my cache and browser history so sometimes I would check to see if the content worked in another browser. If it did, I went back to my preferred browser, cleared cache or web history, and then usually things worked again.

No I haven't, but I don't see that I have any choice at all in this scenario whether I'm using http or https. It's not like I'm browsing for this information using the Add Data tool. If I was, then absolutely I could control which I used when navigating to a location.

My problem is I'm using the Analysis button and then choosing Enrich Layer. The whole thing is an ESRI dialog. I'm only selecting thumbnails, not entering or typing anything. How could I possibly switch this to https?!?!

Tracy, were you ever able to find a solution to this? I just noticed on Esri's MOOC that they have an email address for technical issues - LearnGIS@esri.com . That might be a good place to start in order to get things working properly for you.

I've sort of lost track, actually. I think I did. I'm not getting as much from the course as I hoped, so I've moved on to other things (like finally digging into WAB). I'm just trying to fill in any knowledge gaps and the course seems geared to the 1st time user. As I've come to expect, there are several gotchas along the way. It's not my first instance of having issues with http vs https.
