Trying to georeference jpeg, how do I move image?

Hi,

I am new to Arcgis so this might seem like a simple question for some.  I am trying to georeference a jpeg using a basemap.  When I add the jpeg, it ends up in the middle of the ocean (Gulf of Guinea).  I have tried georeferencing by adding the x and y coordinates.  Is there a way that I can drag/move the jpeg to overlay closer to the place where I would like to georeference it?

Hello, Jessica.

Yes. When you add your image file (jpg) to the map, it should show up in the georeferencing toolbar as the image of interest. If not, use the drop down menu to select it. Set your map extent to the approximate area of interest, and then use the drop down menu for "Georeferncing" to select "Fit to display". This will put your non-georeferenced image in the general vicinity of the correct location, and from there, you can add control points to place it correctly.
