I have created a webmap and asociated web app. I would like to have the record automatically dated, rather than having the person entering the data through a field entry. Is there a way to do this?

What kind of data are you editing (e.g., adding the new record to)? Is it a hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online? If so, then you can check the "Keep track of who created and last updated features" option in the feature layer's Item page properties, which should meet your needs.
