You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard with the Explore tool active.
Just to be clear, I'm with windows 7 sp1 16gig of memories. With a try to activate the querry for map series on 10 of my around 100 layers it take around 60% of my memory and 20% of CPU (take about 15 min to do so by the way).
My project have 2 maps (view) and 6 layouts (it's a very small project since some have 3 to 4 maps and more than 100 layouts)
I just select one of my layout, click on it and check the properties.
Can you provide more context for that screenshot you included?
