Shapefile updating: ArcGIS Online back to ArcMap

Hey,

What is the best fastest and easiest way to update a shapefile back to ArcMap from ArcGIS Online. I will be using collector to edit and record features. I ultimately want to keep the shapefile on our network up to date. What is the best way to update the feature from ArcGIS online back to the shapefile that is saved locally on our network. Is there a way to do this or will we have to download and replace each time?

While there might be other ways to do this, I think at the end of the day downloading your data from ArcGIS Online as a shapefile is probably the most straight forward and fastest solution. It is always a good idea to take regular backups of your data anyways. 

Any alternatives I can think of would take multiple steps and would probably not be as reliable. For example, the Append tool can transfer records from a feature service to a shapefile, but that would only really work for new features, not updated features.
