Allow Specific Users Edit Access to a Hosted Feature Layer without Creating a View

In my organization, we are exclusively using ArcGIS Online. As our organization grows, I'd like to limit edit access to some layers to a few select users, while keep the master data available to all of our staff. This is possible now with group sharing, and creating editable/noneditable views. But it would be nice to assign specific users edit access directly to a hosted feature layer. This will help eliminate confusion between source and view layers, and only require access and maintenance of one item in AGOL.

That's a good idea, I hadn't considered that! It's not perfect, because I don't necessarily want to give access to all the layer settings. Just editing would be enough. But it would probably be fine for my small org!

I will test it out, but do you know if that extends to editing data in Field Maps? For example, if the layer is set to not be editable, would members of the shared update group be able to collect data offline in the field?

I do agree with your suggestion - could envisage an option within a hosted feature layer's settings to pick, from appropriate named users, who would have access to edit etc.. It'd be great from an audit point of view, you'd see instantly who has been assigned to what.

Of course, I wonder if you've considered enabling the shared update option within Groups?

I have my organisational groups setup at a service/team area level - each service has a named group where users can share content in their own secure area. I also have, for those users with the correct types, an "editor's" group for that service - this allows them to share and collab with content as they see fit, it also allows me to put certain layers into the group from my own content that I trust them to work with and manage too.
