The 2026 Esri Energy Resources GIS Conference (ERGIS) brought together GIS professionals, energy leaders, and technology experts to share how geospatial technology is being used across the energy sector. In this webinar recap, Jim Dietterich and Charles Ward focused on the Renewables Track and revisited the themes that stood out across customer presentations, plenary conversations, and on-site interviews.
A recurring theme throughout the webinar was that renewable energy organizations are using GIS in more connected and strategic ways. The discussion opened with a look at geospatial maturity across the industry, noting that organizations are at different stages of their enterprise GIS journeys. Some are beginning to expand from ArcGIS Online into broader enterprise environments, while others are building global platforms that support multiple business units, regions, and teams.
In this clip, Tom Hamill of BrightNight describes GIS as “connective tissue,” helping link real estate, engineering information, environmental constraints, permitting, and project data. That framing helped set up one of the larger takeaways from the webinar: GIS maturity is not only about the technology an organization has adopted. It is also about how deeply GIS is woven into workflows, conversations, and decisions across the business.
One of the clearest examples came from EDP Renewables and its global GIS platform, MAPEIA. The webinar described MAPEIA as a major effort to move from fragmented regional systems into a more connected, standardized, cloud-hosted environment. Before MAPEIA, different countries and regions had their own systems, data strategies, and security models. The new approach was designed to support global visibility, standardization, scalability, data-driven decision-making, and future AI integration.
This clip gives a concise explanation of what MAPEIA was designed to accomplish. The presenters described it as more than a technical implementation. It was also a geospatial excellence story, an enterprise story, and a data story. By consolidating legacy systems and creating a global foundation, EDP Renewables demonstrated what enterprise GIS maturity can look like when data, governance, scalability, and user needs are addressed together.
The webinar also emphasized that GIS is expanding beyond early-stage development. Siting, suitability analysis, environmental constraints, and project design remain important, but more organizations are extending GIS further downstream into mid-stage development, construction coordination, contractor collaboration, compliance, asset management, and long-term portfolio understanding.
RWE was discussed as an example of how GIS teams are supporting more complex parts of the renewable energy project lifecycle. As permitting becomes more complex, construction timelines become tighter, and operational demands increase, reliable spatial data becomes more important. A strong enterprise GIS foundation helps organizations share accurate information with contractors, EPCs, owners’ representatives, and internal teams.
Data strategy was another major takeaway. The conversation made clear that data quality, standardization, and governance are foundational to enterprise GIS. Mergers, acquisitions, repowering, battery storage additions, and multi-party project delivery all increase the need for clean, consistent, and usable geospatial data. Without a strong data foundation, organizations are more likely to duplicate effort, lose context, or miss opportunities to reuse valuable project and asset information.
AI was also part of the discussion, but the message was practical. The webinar framed AI as a force multiplier for GIS professionals, not a replacement for their expertise. Jim and Charles connected AI directly to the importance of spatial thinking, data quality, and domain knowledge.
In this clip, Rob Shapiro from Microsoft explains that judgment, clarity of intent, and domain expertise remain central when using AI. For GIS professionals, that point is especially relevant. AI tools may help accelerate work, but spatial understanding, project context, and data quality are what help make those tools useful.
The webinar closed with a reminder that community is still one of the most valuable parts of events like ERGIS. Customer presentations, hallway conversations, social events, and peer discussions all help GIS professionals learn from one another. The examples from EDP Renewables, NextEra Energy, BrightNight, RWE, and others showed that many renewable energy organizations are working through similar challenges, even if their teams, regions, and project portfolios look different.
For renewable energy professionals, the larger takeaway is that GIS is becoming a shared foundation for planning, collaboration, decision-making, and long-term asset understanding. The organizations making progress are not only adopting new technology. They are investing in data, people, workflows, and the internal communities needed to make geospatial work scalable.
