Use a Popup to go to Heading Link

Hello,

I am migrating a StoryMap to the new format.

I have a main map that has fire stations on it. I would like users to be able to click on a station in that map and have StoryMaps show the page associated with that station.

I have set up headings for this and copied the URL to the popup, but the URL opens in a new window rather than the same StoryMap.

Is this possible, if so, how can it be done?

@MeleKoneya -- @JamesPoeschel is correct, there is a technical limitation preventing heading links from working as you expect from within web map pop-ups. However, This capability does work from within express map pop-ups. I'm not sure if that would be an option for you. Update: I thought of something we could try to make this work from web map pop-ups, and it does make the link work as you expect. You can use HTML to format the hyperlink in your feature layer data field to force the link to jump to the heading in the story without reloading the page or opening a new tab. You can just use the target="_self" attribute when formatting the anchor tag for the link, like this...

Also, depending on your needs, you also could look at using a collection with a cover map. In that case, you'd create individual stories for each "section," group them within a collection, and enable the map in the design panel in the collection builder. I believe popups in web maps are not able to control navigation within a StoryMap. Links from popups are treated as external URLs, so they will open in a new tab even if they point to the same story. Currently there is no way to trigger in-place navigation to a section of a StoryMap from a map popup.

Depending on how big your sections are per station, you could write about each station and include Action Triggers to allow the user to zoom to each station point in the map by clicking on its name. Here's an example where the user can click the name of a POI and then the map will zoom to that point automatically.

Or for each of your station sections, you can have a separate map (but the same map source) and have the default zoom centered on the station of interest.
