Enable Symbol Layer Drawing in ArcGIS Online

Hello everyone!

I published some road data from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online (Shared as a Web Map) - in this map, I have the "Enable Symbol Layer Drawing" turned on so the roads look like one feature

When I view the map in ArcGIS Online - it looks like the setting is not carried over:

Does anyone know if there is a similar setting in ArcGIS Online? I tried to add the road as a separate shapefile as well, and it still shows up as separate features.

Alternatively - I'm thinking I can duplicate the feature and make it merged into one road, and overlay that on top to create the effect, but I'm just curious if there is a setting I can use first before I do that.

I'm not sure if Vector Tiles support Symbol Layer Drawing but if you're just using the roads for reference then it's worth trying out.

This is on our to do list for later this year to support reading in maps authored with these configurations published from Pro and supporting authoring/editing them in Map Viewer.

For a while I was just using basemaps, but all of the basemaps have incorrect roads and building shapes for our campus, and it was starting to get too fussy to have to keep submitting revision updates, so I just made my own custom layer.

@RussRoberts Huzzah! That's awesome!

To give a little background context - we're in the process of trying to move away from the Concept3D platform and covert our campus map into an ArcGIS-based app. We need a little more customized features in order to fill some of our functionality needs.

What I did in the meantime was duplicate the same layer and merge it all into one feature in ArcGIS Pro, and then layered it on top of the original feature. The original road layer I used for the labels and just displayed the merged layer on top (removed one of them from the legend and pop-ups so users only get one layer). It does the trick for now!

@RussRoberts Would this be incorporating support for symbol layer drawing for everything related to ArcGIS Online including Field Maps and in tile layers and mobile map packages? I was trying to make a mobile map package for our Motor Vehicle Use Map and our complex symbology is not showing up correctly without the symbol layer drawing support (example below). It does appear that the .mmpk supports symbol layer drawing as when I load it in ArcGIS Pro, the symbology displays correctly, but it doesn't work in Field Maps.

@DavidHood_USFS I haven't tested it with Field Maps, but I was able to figure out a little bit of a workaround!

It involved creating duplicate layers - I wanted it to look unified, but also needed labels to show up in specific parts of the road, which I couldn't get it to do with a merged line feature.

So this is what I did:

Took the road layer and duplicated it -
- Road 1: Left the layer as-is
- Road 2: Merged all of the lines into one line feature (in ArcGIS Pro)
In ArcGIS Online -
- Place Road 2 on top of Road 1
- Turn on the labels only for Road 1
- So you only see Road 2 but and the labels for Road 1

And voilà! I got the same effect. The caveat is that you need duplicate layers, but it worked for the intended purpose. Here is what the final version looks like. You can zoom in, labels still appear in the correct spot, but the roads all look like one feature.

You can also remove the extra layer from the legend, pop-ups, etc so it's not confusing to viewers.

Symbol layer draw order - reading and authoring is planned for this UC release in Map Viewer. It requires you use vector/CIM symbols just like in Pro and available across a number of styles. Pro 3.7 will also publish web maps with symbol layer drawing as well.

We are also going to be supporting reading maps in with alternate symbols authored from Pro (Types and Class Breaks) but no authoring will be ready for this release.

Thanks Sara, I was thinking the same thing about merging road segments, but that won't completely solve my problem as I can only merge the roads where the allowed vehicle types and seasons are the same.
