Which type of map is more reliable today?

Which type of map is more reliable today: static or dynamic? Static maps, often in digital formats like JPEG and PNG, cover specific areas and remain a dependable resource, frequently used both inside and outside the office. On the other hand, dynamic maps are user-friendly, flexible, responsive to changing situations, updatable, and open to feedback from users. Despite these advantages, it's still unclear which type is ultimately more useful and reliable.

It depends on the use case to be honest. In my job we use both. A static map is good for presenting the scope of work to council members and the public but a dynamic map is more useful for the engineers in the departments to be able to track tasks and manage different assets.

The main problem with dynamic map is maintenance and updates of the datasets. 
It's always a trade-off and evaluation of the ressources you have to ensure it's always up and running

Just my opinion, but it really depends on how often the data is updated and how the map is intended to be used. Neither is superior to the other, just different tools in the same toolbox. Use the one that matches the situation.

If the data is changing multiple times in a day/week/month or you need to show detailed data over a large area then dynamic, digital maps are more useful and reliable. Examples could be maps that have time sensitive information or a water distribution system for a city that has valves, hydrants and fittings.

On the other hand, if the data is fairly static, there is no cell service, many people need to see the map at once or electronic device batteries may not last long enough then static, printed maps are more useful and reliable. Examples that come to mind are emergency services or outdoor recreation in remote areas.

Who knows maybe someday the technology will be there that static, printed maps are no longer needed, but I think we are still a long way off from that.
