Coincident Lines - No Error

Question

Hi,

I created duplicate line data by accident. The utility network did not pick it up. I thought the topology engine would know when coincident line data is here, similar to stacked points.

I recreated the example in the sample data above. Both features have the same terminals and subnetwork name. Pro 2.9.4, UN V5, FGDB

I found this odd since this was a problem we had in the geometric network. I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong. Is this expected?

I done more testing around coincident lines. What I found is that at the real world scenario you mentioned actually does not work in the utility network, as the subnetwork stops where coincident lines occurs. I was hoping that the utility network was going to help me finding these situations and mark it as an error.

Here is my example:

Highlight green is my subnetwork. I spread the lines apart for visualization, but the result is the same when coincident. My previous example had it at an place where it was supposed to stop.

A warning during subnetwork building would be greatly appreciated!

I appreciate your response Jens. Perhaps so, but I would expect an offset if parallel. No worry of a loop condition here with a radial network? Not tested that yet.

What you report as an error could very well be a real-world scenario - parallel connections (overhead lines / cables) between two point in the network.

You'll likely have to do your own analysis to find line features with duplicate geometries.
