Manage Editing Permissions for Web Maps

Question

Hi,

I'm a bit of a noobie so am probably missing something obvious, but when I create web map (from ArcGIS Pro) and then share it with everybody (public) the layers, tables, everything can be modified. Even when I try using a hosted web layer, I have the same problem. Anyone who opens the link can change the names, delete layers, etc.

What is the best way to share a map and make it "read only?"

Ideally the view could toggle layers "on/off" but not change any layers, features, etc.

So the user can edit the web map, but can't save any of these edits?  Unless they are part of the Organization, or have otherwise been given permission?

- They would only be able to do a Save As which would create a new web map under their content. The Save it to the original it would have to be your account, an admin in your org or a member in a group that has this map in it and has been configured for shared item updates.

So then the next user, someone completely different who opens the link won't see the original users edits?  Am I understanding this correctly?

- Correct your web map will be unchanged.

Thanks for the tip on the Instant App templates. I will check it out 🙂

Web maps are always editable, the edits cannot be pushed back to your map unless you have shared it to a group that supports other members to push those updates back. If you want to restrict this experience you can share your web map to your audience in a simple app using one of the Instant App templates.
