I'm evaluating this option and comparing it to some of the other market options available for converting video to FMV. We have a lot of older video with corresponding gpx files from a basic handheld unit. The gpx files contain most the basic metadata (i.e. lat, long, bearing, time stamp, altitude, etc) but is lacking much of the other senor data like pitch, roll, any of the field of view metadata (i.e. frame coordinates).

I understand that with this metadata I don't have the required info to utilize the tools ability to calculate the field of view for display in ArcMap but simply showing the aircraft track would be a nice. What is the bare minimum metadata this tool requires in order to produce a FMV capable of just showing the aircraft track?

Hello James Kellough,

Thanks for your inquiry.  If you have the basic metadata you mention in a gpx file, it can be utilized in a straight forward manner to display the aircraft position and track in ArcGIS 10.x.

Simply import your gpx file directly into excel as an xml file, then save it as a csv (comma-separated values) file.  This csv file is then input along with the video data into the Video Multiplexer tool which will create a new video file with the metadata inserted in the appropriate place.  The FMV Addin (which is free by the way) will then position the sensor/platform on a map in ArcGIS Desktop.  There are several excellent image-based and other basemaps available as a backdrop.

The minimum needed to project the sensor platform on a map is basic GPS data, i.e., latitude and longitude of the sensor platform along with the Unix Time Stamp.

Additionally, if you collect the metadata listed below, the FMV Video Multiplexer will calculate the video frame corners, and thus the size, shape, and position of the video frame outline and display it on the map. This type of information is usually readily available from consumer and commercial-grade IMU (Inertial Motion Unit) and GPS units. Once this basic information is multiplexed into your video data, you will be able to mark and make measurements in your video, and overlay, create and edit feature data either in ArcMap or the video, seamlessly.

Required parameters to display video frame corners on the map, and digitize features on the video or map are:

* UNIX Time Stamp: Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

* Platform Heading
* Platform Pitch
* Platform Roll
* Sensor Latitude
* Sensor Longitude

* SensorAltitude
* Horizontal FOV, from the camera manufacturer

And if the sensor is on a gimbal:
* Sensor Relative Azimuth
* Sensor Relative Elevation
* Sensor Relative Roll

If the information above is collected into a GPX file, it can be utilized in the ArcGIS desktop platform efficiently and straightforwardly.

Hi Good Day,

i would just like to ask if why when we are using the Multiplexer tool of FMV 1.3, the resulting video is always 16 seconds long. the Video and the GPX metadata came from a Garmin Virb. Below is a link for the Produced video with the Corresponding CSV. Thank you very much. you can also reach me with my email address: Jatienza@geodata.com.ph

Hello Jonathan,

The unix time stamp needs to be microseconds rather than milliseconds, and I notice other discrepancies in your metadata CSV file.  I will reply directly to your email address to discuss.

Hi there,

I am trying to use this feature to add the necessary metadata to some underwater video collected via a towed camera system. I have all of the necessary information for the multiplexer tool but when I run it, it only takes about a second before it says it has successfully completed the action of merging the video and metadata and nothing is output.

Below are links to the files I'm trying to test, any input would be greatly appreciated!

I am using the FMV Geoprocessing Toolbox 1.3 on ArcMap 10.4.1

Hello Sarah,

I noticed that there were blank cells in the metadata csv file; everything without a timestamp needs to be deleted. Are the senor altitude values below sea level, where sea level is zero?

Perhaps we can communicate via email for questions/answers, then I will post the revised metadata csv file so others can use it as an example?

Thanks,

Jeff

Is there an ETA for the Seminar video in the ESRI training class catalog?  The web page says "Recording coming soon".

JeffLiedtke
Esri Contributor

Kimberly,

The training seminar video has been out and available online for quite some time - many months.  I don't know why the page says "Recording coming soon" - maybe maintenance?  In any case I will see that this link directs you to the training video or update the link to the video.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hello,

It's been a week and I have yet to receive a response with help on this. I've sent a couple emails responding to your questions, is the above the correct email address?

Thank you,

Sarah Grasty

Sarah,

Thanks for clarification regarding your metadata values. I summarize them, and how to set some of the video multiplexer parameters accordingly below.

  • Since the video is 1 minute long and you have 60 metadata records we can assume that the “frames per second” is 1.
  • The multiplexer needs sensor altitude values relative to mean sea level. Thus, they will be negative numbers.
  • I understand that the sensor is set at a fixed angle of -32.8 degrees relative to the platform. Thus, I set the relative sensor elevation to the -32.8 angle – the pitch variation is handled by the platform pitch values.
  • When you select ‘Calculate corners’, use a value less than the minimum sensor altitude. I used -51m but since the sensor was a few meters above the bottom you could use a value of perhaps -54 or so.
  • One excel idiosyncrasy  -  whenever you open your csv in Excel it converts your UNIX time stamps to scientific notation.  Before closing/saving your csv, make sure to format the cell for the whole column to “Number” with zero decimal places. You need to do this every time you explicitly open the file in Excel.
  • A clip of the metadata files is shown below, along with the video in the video player and displaying the video frame footprint and sensor ground track (and pointing direction of the sensor)

Submersible metadata fields and values for use the the Esri FMV Add-In

Video from submersible sensor in the FMV video player, with the sensor ground track, pointing direction and video frame footprint displayed

Good luck with your work,

Jeff

Dear Sir/Madam,

How can I download this extension to play the sample data, that I have download, so could you please tell me how to do it?

JeffLiedtke
Esri Contributor

Hello Suong Sovann,

Please see the FMV Product Page www.esri.com/fmv and go to the bottom of the page for instructions on how to obtain the FMV Add-In.  The latest release is FMV Add-In 1.3.1 - make sure to get the right version that matches your version of ArcMap.  Supported ArcMap versions are 10.3x and 10.4.x.

I've downloaded the tutorial files for FMV 1.3.1 but I don't see a .mxd in the Data folder. Is this an oversight? It seems the other materials referenced in the download (data, video, etc.) are present.

JeffLiedtke
Esri Contributor

Steve,

There is not a .mxd in the tutorial.  Instead, the instructions walk you through setting up the environment to use the FMV Add-In effectively.  This includes loading a basemap, how to load a video into the video manager, GIS layers from Catalog into the Table of Contents to get ready for editing, etc.

By the way, the tutorial will be updated in about a week to use smaller videos for more efficient downloads, but the course material is essentially the same as this version.

I hope the tutorial is worthwhile and beneficial, let us know how it goes for you.  Thanks!

Is is possible to use FMV functionality (display video + show frame on the map at the same time) on the web?

Does JS API 4 support it?  If not, is it planned?

Do you know any examples of applying mentioned functionality on the website, perhaps with other techniques?

JeffLiedtke
Esri Contributor

Michal,

Presently, there is no FMV web capability, however FMV in a web environment is planned for late 2017.  We expect to use JS API 4.x, but this may change as we get closer to implementation.

When will FMV for ArcGIS 10.5 be available? I can't see the download in My Esri yet...

CodyBenkelman

Hello Nick

We are putting the finishing touches on FMV version 1.3.2 as I write this - It should be released next week.  Note this is not technically part of 10.5, but our team did an excellent job of staying on schedule so that FMV 1.3.2 (which supports 10.5 and older versions of ArcMap) would be available nearly simultaneously with 10.5.

Note to those migrating to ArcGIS Pro:  version 1.4 of Pro will be out in January, and we have been testing FMV in our Dev version of Pro with some great new 3D capabilities, but we won't be able to make the merger into Pro at 1.4.  The next version of ArcGIS Pro, to be released by UC 2017, will have FMV built in - no longer an "add in".

Hello everyone i'm noob at Full Motion Video, i'm trying to use a .ts video from a FLIR Star Safire 380-HD SPOTTER, the FMV extension reads ans display the video on arcmap, but the frame outline does not appear and not enable the editing features capabilitie. Do you think is necessary add something to the video? i compare with the video from the web course in esri training and the metadata is basically the same. Thank you in advance.

Edward

I'm not familiar with that FLIR camera, but their data sheet at http://www.flir.com/uploadedFiles/flirGS/Surveillance/Products/Star_SAFIRE_HD_Family/Star_SAFIRE_HD_...  does indicate it captures the correct metadata (they have a typo and say "MISP" where it should be "MISB") - our FMV add-in requires MISB format metadata in compliance with Standard 0601.

A few thoughts

  1. Can you send us a short video file for testing?
  2. Do you need to do anything with the camera configuration to activate (turn on) the metadata collection?
  3. you said you compared the metadata to our training course; do you mean you have a way of viewing the metadata, or are you referring to something like documentation, e.g. the data sheet I referenced above?  If you are able to view the actual metadata, what tool(s) are you using to do that?

Thank you Cody for your help,

As you see in the mail from Jeff, the issue is related with Flir sensor calibration. I will review with the technician operator what is wrong.

Thank you in advance.

yes, sorry for the delay.  With the Christmas holiday we simply ran out of time.  version 1.3.2 is not yet complete but once again "any day now".  We are in final test - I expect to release next week.

JLiedtke-esristaff‌ Is there any update on the status of integrating with DJI Phantom and Inspire with FMV?  We use both the Phantom 4, Inspire 1 and Inspire 2; we are really looking forward to the possibility of using FMV.

CodyBenkelman

Cameron

the US distributor for DJI, https://compassdrone.com/ , are developing an application that will process the flight metadata from DJI UAVs into a format readable by ArcGIS - specifically, the FMV Multiplexer GP tool.  I am not sure of the details but the good folks at CompassDrone should be able to advise.
