Ok, given that "A relational database will never outperform a flat file in a single-user "access all rows" test.", where are the performance metrics for ArcSDE vs File Geodatabase for multiple-user with limited number of rows access?

The only numbers I have been able to find were from this whitepaper: > ArcGIS Server in Practice Series: High Capacity Map Services: A Use-Case with CORINE Land Cover Data
http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.whitepapers.viewPaper&PID=66&MetaID=1549
and in this Whitepaper the File Geodatabase was able to generate almost twice as many maps  per hour and had a better response time (page 20 figure 7).

In the following whitepaper, they seemed to use both types but did not compare them (unless I missed it somehow): ArcGIS Server in Practice Series: ArcGIS Server Web Mapping Application for Municipal/Local Govt.
http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.whitepapers.viewPaper&PID=66&MetaID=1540

So does anyone else have performance metrics?

Thanks

Update.... I see that the Corinne study was not a fair comparison as the File Geodatabase was stored locally not in a shared folder, which almost certainly would have incurred a performance hit.  On our network which is a latency disaster, the performance difference would probably be huge, so I suppose if you have massive quantities of storage directly on your ArcGIS server, then there might be an advantage to using a local file geodatabase.

Hi J oN,

The Esri Performance Benchmarks page, on the Enterprise GIS Resource Center might have something. Check out the Implementation Gallery for some additional case studies - they may contain additional comparisons.

Hope this helps,
