Breaking up or converting shapefiles into multiple objects within a feature class.

I'm trying to incorporate data from two shapefiles into a new map. Our city had a virtual mapping of road conditions done, to assess which parts of town needed repairs first, second, etc. I am trying to import the general findings of that mapping, ie. the color-coded street lines, into a new map to publish on the city's website. The problem is, that the only way they could supply the data to us was in the for of two shape files. One is just lines showing the route of mapping, and is a simple line shapefile. The other is a shapefile of colored points, but, the points are all registering as a single shape/feature, but the color coding got lost in translation apparently, so they are all once color, and dont show the conditions of the various streets.

My question is this. Can you 'break apart' a shapefile, or force varied parameters on it? I am wanting to change the colors of the dots according the orginal 'condition' rendering.

To me, it sounds like your colored points shapefile is a multipart feature. Meaning that even though the shapes are physically separated, it's consolidated into a single feature in the shapefile.

You might be able to "explode" the multipart features into individual records, if that's what you're trying to do.

I tried, but it wont let me 'explode' it. thanks for the advice, i can see where it will come in handy with other less stubborn projects. at this point im considering creating it from scratch.
